The actors handle the narration and dialogue so well that no character is ever stereotyped, the humor is usually delightful, along with the listener is led over the multilayered stories of maids and mistresses. The novel can be a superb intertwining of non-public and political history in Jackson, Miss., within the early 1960s, but this reading gives it a deeper and fuller power. Additionally, reviewers loved (and loathed) Stockett's three-dimensional characters—and cheered and hissed their favorites to the end. Several critics questioned Stockett's decision to work with much dialect solely for the black characters. Overall, however, The Help is really a compassionate, original story, also as a possible excellent choice for book groups.
